How tough can this be!īoth units are running v6.1.2 and while I'm not happy about feeling like I can't upgrade to new versions of the firmware. Then the unit at work just recently started to have random lockups.

Issues seemed to settle down.for a while. (Old firmware available on Netgear website) I finally reverted the drive back to the firmware I was using at work (v6.1.2). I backed up all my data to another drive so I could play with the unit. So I tried copying manually and it would kill the whole NAS unit! Many other experiments later I was able to easily reproduce the problem with just file transfers. The log files from my backup indicated that it was choking on large video file that was being copied. As in you can ping it, but can't access it via the web interface or via the file share. Then the home unit started locking up randomly. At home I updated the firmware when prompted and life was good.

One at home for windows file backup and video streaming (I use a Boxee box) and one at work for just windows file backup.Ĭons: For about six months after I bought the unit things went fine. web interface is easy to use if a bit clumsy. If you are an expert in creating shares and locking them down with specific permissions, then go right ahead.ĭo store VMs on the device and use VMWare on another dedicated server to mount the volumes via iSCSI connection created in the ReadyNAS UI. Use a dedicated Plex box and mount the share on the ReadyNAS where all content is stored - THEN it will work.ĭo store music and pictures on the device and just use the default shares for those types of file types and you will never have an issue with file permissions.

The things you CANNOT do are: Install PLEX - unless all your videos are small 20MB or 480p or less with mono audio tracks the CPU in this unit WILL NOT TRANSCODE so it will run like garbage. Overall Review: Reading the reviews here, there are somethings you CAN do with this NAS and some things you CANNOT do.

The VPN app workls great for allowing remote devices to connect to your local network over a secure connection from anywhere. Content and Music can be shared across multiple devices. Pros: Great server for keeping files backed up or accessible from a central location from multiple devices. Keep in mind it is not an app server per se and while I have had no issues using the replacement as a Plex server I still think it is worth the money as a storage target. In closing I will say that for the price this thing is great as a storage device. The new unit has been chugging along with no reboots for months now. I can't say enough about the support, especially in a day when most companies make theirs as horrible as possible. They even provided cross shipping! They also followed up after I shipped back the failing unit. I was able to replace the unit with very little hassle. They were friendly, fast, responsive to my issues. I troubleshot as time permitted and finally contacted tech support detailing everything that happened and all troubleshooting I had performed. Through the year they became progressively worse. About 2 months in I started experiencing occasional hard locks on my unit. I have had no problems with the USB ports and have used them to maintain a backup of my xraid array.įinally, I wanted to share my experience with support. I use a competitors nas as backup storage targets at work on managed Cisco switches and get roughly the same throughput. If you absolutely need this device to do more then spend the money on the i3 1gb model.Īs for the speed concern, on a home switch gigabit network I get ~30mbs throughput with 7200rpms. I personally am running only the Plex app in addition to it's normal functions. The specs are not conducive to a lot of memory and processor intensive applications. It is a dedicated device and not a multipurpose server. The first thing I would say is that this is a good device if you manage your expectations. After a year of ownership I am happy and want to share a positive experience. Overall Review: This is a follow up review for this item.
